Mayan Vendedera

Panajachel, Guatemala
Mayan Vendedera

Stepping down from the bus in this lakeside village, I was met by dozens of children offering souvenirs. One young girl caught my eye. No more than 12 or 13 years of age, she had several woven articles in hand as well as others wrapped around her that she was begging us to purchase. Upon closer inspection, I found hanging from her neck inside a colorful woven cloth a baby no more a few weeks old. She told me the boy was hers. A dozen years would separate this mother and son for her life of working in the streets.
